Photo Tips

Good photos turn your phone into a diagnostic tool. This checklist is specific to shooting an F-150 engine bay — follow it and every part will be identifiable when you pin it in My Photo Diagram.

What looks out of place

Reading your photos for problems — signs you can spot without any tools

  • Fresh wet or oily spots, drips or shiny streaks on otherwise dusty parts

    What it usually means — An active fluid leak — oil, coolant, power-steering fluid or brake fluid depending on location.

    What to do — Compare the spot's location with the component pages to identify which fluid lives there. Brake fluid anywhere is urgent — don't drive until it's checked.

  • Cracks, fraying, glazing (shiny ribs) or missing chunks on the serpentine belt

    What it usually means — A worn belt that can fail without warning and take the water pump, alternator and power steering with it.

    What to do — Note the wear in your inspection and plan a belt replacement. Photograph the routing first. Verification Required for exact belt size — check your truck's documentation.

  • White, green or blue crust around battery terminals

    What it usually means — Corrosion at the terminals — a common cause of slow cranking and no-starts.

    What to do — See the Starting System guide. Cleaning terminals is a beginner job, but disconnect order and eye protection matter — read the guide first.

  • Swollen, mushy or rock-hard hoses; white or pink crusty residue at hose joints

    What it usually means — A hose nearing failure (swelling/softness) or a slow coolant leak that has been drying and leaving deposits.

    What to do — Mark the hose in your photo diagram and check it cold by squeezing. Crusty residue means the clamp or hose is weeping — see the Cooling & Hose Map.

  • Coolant reservoir level far above MAX or below MIN, or coolant that looks rusty or oily

    What it usually means — Low level suggests a leak; oily or milky coolant can indicate a serious internal engine problem.

    What to do — Only check the level stone cold — never open a hot system. If coolant looks contaminated, stop and consult a professional.

  • A hose, wire or connector visibly unplugged, cracked or rubbing against something sharp

    What it usually means — Disconnected vacuum hoses and chafed wiring cause rough running, warning lights and mystery faults.

    What to do — Don't reconnect anything you can't identify. Photograph it, pin it in My Photo Diagram, and trace it with the Connection Map first.

  • Nesting material, leaves or chewed wiring insulation

    What it usually means — Rodent activity — chewed wires cause intermittent electrical faults that are hard to trace.

    What to do — Clear debris carefully (gloves on) and inspect nearby wiring. Any chewed insulation needs repair before it shorts.

  • A part that looks newer, cleaner or different from everything around it

    What it usually means — Someone has been here before — a previous repair or replacement.

    What to do — Useful information, not a problem. Note it in your inspection so future-you knows which parts aren't original.

These are general warning signs, not diagnoses. Anything safety-critical — brakes, steering, fuel smell, contaminated coolant — goes to a professional before you drive. Always verify against your actual truck.

Fixing bad photos

Common problems and the quick fix

  • Photo too darkMove the truck out of direct shade contrast, add a work light from the side, and tap the dark area on your phone screen to expose for it.
  • Harsh glare on plastic coversChange your angle a few degrees or shoot when the sun is lower. Polarised light (early morning/late afternoon) reduces reflections.
  • Can't tell where a close-up was takenRetake it with one step back so a landmark (battery, intake tube, reservoir) is in frame — or always take the wide master shot first.
  • Labels and cap text unreadableHold the phone parallel to the surface, tap to focus on the text, and wipe the cap first.
  • Everything looks the same in every photoFollow the fixed shot list in the same order every time — consistency is what makes comparison between visits possible.

Tips and tricks that save you later

Small habits that prevent big reassembly headaches

  • Shoot a video walk-around as well as photosA slow 30-second video narrating what you are looking at catches hoses and connectors you would never think to photograph, and you can pause it on any frame later.
  • Put a scale in the shotA coin, a socket or your finger next to a bolt head or hose end tells you the size later, when the part is off the truck and everything looks the same.
  • Bag and photograph bolts per stepOne sandwich bag per step, with the bag written on, photographed next to the part it came off. This alone prevents most reassembly headaches.
  • Tape-label both ends of everything you unplugMasking tape and a marker on both halves of a connector or both ends of a hose. Photos help, tape never lies.
  • Photograph the same angle every visitStand in the same spot each time. Flick between two identical angles weeks apart and a new leak or a slipped hose jumps straight out at you.
  • Use a mirror or the phone's front camera for blind spotsHold the phone face-in under a bracket or behind the engine with the screen toward you. You get a shot of places your head cannot reach.
  • Wipe a suspect area clean, then run and re-shootOld grime tells you nothing. Clean and dry a suspected leak, run the engine, photograph again — fresh wet means an active leak.
  • Shoot with the work light behind you, low and to one sideLight across a surface rather than straight at it reveals cracks in belts and hoses that a flat flash hides completely.
  • Photograph every label, decal and cap symbol you findUnder-hood decals, the door-jamb sticker and cap symbols are the only specifications that came with your truck. Capture them before they fade.
  • Back the photos up off the phone the same dayThe reassembly reference you cannot afford to lose is the one only stored in one place.

Safety while shooting

  • • Engine off and cold. Never reach into a running engine bay for a better angle.
  • • Keep loose clothing, lanyards and long hair away from the front of the engine.
  • • Never open the radiator cap or a hot reservoir for a photo.
  • • Don't lean the phone (or yourself) on the battery.
