Where each fluid goes in, where it comes out, how to check it and where it tends to leak from. Fluid types and capacities are deliberately not stated — the wrong fluid can destroy a transmission or a brake system.

Handling fluids safely

  • • Never open a hot cooling system — pressurised coolant causes serious burns.
  • • Brake fluid damages paint and absorbs moisture. Keep containers sealed.
  • • Coolant is toxic to animals. Catch it in a sealed container and dispose of it properly.
  • • A/C refrigerant must only be recovered by a qualified technician with proper equipment.
  • • Relieve fuel pressure before opening any fuel connection, and keep ignition sources away.
