Every circuit needs a way out and a way back. Most puzzling electrical faults on an older truck are a bad connection or a missing ground, not a failed part.

Main engine harness
Runs along the intake and down each side of the engine, feeding sensors, injectors and ignition.
Harness retainers
Clips hold the harness away from heat and moving parts. Missing clips cause chafing and shorts.

Battery negative to engine
Battery to block or head
Main return path for the starter's very high current.
If missing or corroded
- • No crank or slow crank

- • Strange voltages all over the truck
Battery negative to chassis / body
Battery to frame or inner fender
Returns body and accessory circuits.

Engine to body ground strap
Rear of the engine or head to firewall
Ties engine and body potential together for sensors and accessories.

PCM grounds
Module ground points on the engine or body
The control module needs solid, clean grounds to read sensors correctly.

Before probing anything electrical, disconnect the battery negative cable when you are working on cables or the starter. Never pierce wire insulation to test — use the connector.
